Our libraries are closed, too, but a few weeks ago they "opened" a few for curbside pickup three days a week, limited hours. We can request books, etc., on-line, receive an email when they are ready, and have one week to collect them. Don't know how it will work in winter, if we're still under partial lock down. But they have quite a system for keeping everyone apart (masks are mandatory) and efficiently deliver the goods.

Thanks for the background, Terry. I love being able to factor in the real locations to the books I read and always keep an atlas handy when I'm reading. Although nowadays its Google maps. Gus

Moremeo, sounds like an intriguing story. Ken Kesey also wrote, "Sometimes a Great Notion." A movie by the same name came out in 1971. The story took place in a fictional Oregon town but much of it was filmed along the Siletz River in Oregon. I have posted a number of puzzles on here that used photos I took at or near the Siletz River and the Siletz Bay. Terry

I'm a big Ken Kesey fan. I won't bore you with the details but that book saved my life in 1969. I was so glad they did it justice in the movie.

The greatest movie ever! I have seen it many times, and each time with tears in my eyes. I admit that the first time I saw it, I swore at Nurse Rachet. I admire all the actors in that movie, and also want to mention Will Sampson. Of course I have the DVD. Vips

Wow! Very interesting story, Terry, and I LOVED "building" this huge building. It is always kind of fun to actually see things that are included in a real movie. I also liked your last sentence -- very funny, Terry. :-)) I love your information about places and things. THANK YOU for sharing the info and picture of this "notable" building.

magic, As I understand it, this location still operates as a public psychiatric hospital by the state of Oregon. It used to house as many as 3,600 patients but is smaller now, partly because there are satellite facilities elsewhere and partly because more work is being done by private practices. It is called Oregon State Hospital today which sounds less scary than its original name, Oregon Hospital for the Insane, when constructed back in 1883. In earlier years, the facility did shock therapy, lobotomies and sterilizations. There have been many changes over the years. I don't agree with the mentally ill being held in chains. Today our legal system will send mentality ill criminals to a place like this instead of to the prison down the road. However, it is a fine line between being mentally ill and merely being a bad person who does horrific things. I worked as a correctional officer for four years. Our prisons have plenty of inmates who are "mentally questionable" but they are not sent there because of their questionable mental state, they were sent there because of their bad behavior was a danger to our society. Nan, I think the inside would look more sinister, Terry

Good Day Terry, I have said this before... but you do nice work. The picture, movie and novel for me like with you has special significance. Kesey's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was a masterpiece. Way ahead of its time in 1962. I am curious as it looks like the hospital is still in operation. Does Oregon's mental health system continue to operate state hospitals? Most other states have closed them all and contracted everything out. In some ways that was an improvement. In other ways this is my humble opinion they threw out the baby wit the bathwater. Currently the greatest provider of mental health services in the US is the prison system. I find that fact morbidly ironic. Dr. Pinel freed the mentally ill from their chains in Paris in 1800. And now they are there again. Thanks for finding and posting this latest piece of your art.

i doubt anyone who read the book or saw the movie could ever forget it. Building doesn't look as sinister today. made a good puzzle Terry.
